Everest Historical Moments Series
Junko Tabei – a Japanese mountaineer who dreamed of summiting Everest was constantly being told women can’t achieve this, but being determined, she never sacrificed her dreams. Later, she first made history by leading the first women-only ascent of Annapurna III in Nepal and then in 1975, continued to defy convention and make history by being the first woman to reach the summit of Everest on the 16th May at 35 years of age.
Junko continued to make history and established another record in 1992, when she became the first woman to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents.
